چکیده

Low power consumption has been established as the third main design target for digital systems together with performance and area. Consequently, accurate estimators of the power consumption at the system as well as the lower levels of abstraction are necessary. A large number of embedded computing applications are power or energy critical. Early work on processor analysis had focused on performance improvement without determining the power-performance tradeoffs. Recently, significant research in low power design and power estimation and analysis has been developed. In this project, the measurements taken for the development of instruction-level energy models for microprocessors are presented and analyzed. By combining energy coefficient values, the presented model became much simpler than most proposed models that can speed up the energy estimation process and

An instruction-level energy model for embedded VLIW architectures

In this paper, an instruction-level energy model is proposed for the data-path of very long instruction word (VLIW) pipelined processors that can be used to provide accurate power consumption information during either an instruction-level simulation or power-oriented scheduling at compile time. The analytical model takes into account several software-level parameters (such as instruction orderi...

Energy Estimation in High Level Cycle-accurate Descriptions of Embedded Systems

Simulating performance and energy consumption of embedded systems using a high-level description is a challenging task in VLSI CAD. However such simulations are needed to select the best hardware architecture and software organization for a particular application. In this paper, we present an approach for cycle-accurate hardware/software co-simulations of energy consumption in embedded systems....

Developing an environment for embedded software energy estimation

The paper presents the results of a novel method for the instruction-level energy consumption measurement and the corresponding modeling approach for embedded microprocessors. According to the proposed method the base and interinstruction energy costs of the ARM7TDMI embedded processor as well as the energy cost due to different values in the instruction parameters are modeled. These models can...

A Framework for Modeling and Estimating the Energy Dissipation of VLIW-Based Embedded Systems

This paper describes a technique for modeling and estimating the power consumption at the systemlevel for embedded VLIW (Very Long InstructionWord) architectures. The method is based on a hierarchy of dynamic power estimation engines: from the instruction-level down to the gate/transistor-level. Power macromodels have been developed for the main components of the system: theVLIWcore, the registe...
